Inspiration is everywhere and as UX designers in banking we are constantly doing UX research on how to improve our roles. We recently had a brainstorming session to see how we can learn about new ideas and best practices in successful product design. We were keen to discover different ideas and insights that could help our understanding of product development, ideation and innovation rather than the usual visual design, (interface design), user experience, user interfaces, UI design or usability testing.

Our client operates in more than 20 African countries and needed to design, develop and deploy a generic and unified multi-platform and multi-device, internet banking solution for retail and SME customers.

This bank is developing and expanding its range of multi-channel consumer banking apps with features such as beneficiary creation, asset tracking, investment portfolio management, account transfers, etc. A mobile solution for both tablet and phone were needed.

We often see developers and designers creating applications that are an extension of the backend platform and are therefore disconnected from the real-world experience of a field worker,” says Mary Brittain-White, CEO of Retriever Communications. “The usability study provides an improved understanding of how field workers use mobile apps in real-world settings and the resulting heuristics aim to promote more intuitive interactions with field applications for increased productivity.”

Corporate banking might seem far removed from the digital disruption that has rattled industries including music, retail, and travel. Hashing out eight or even ten figure lending and transaction arrangements, facilitating cross-border payments and providing financial management advice to businesses that dot the globe present a scale and complexity that may seem ill-suited to the sleek simplicity of the point-and-click Internet world.
